Scooters or Mopeds: What is the difference?
There are some distinct differences between Scooters and Mopeds.
Mopeds are considered to have engines below 50cc’s and to be considered a Scooter the engine has to be 50cc or over, which is considered to be a motorcycle in today’s standards. Although some manufacturing companies still consider it to be a moped even if the engine is over the 50cc’s.
Mopeds usually come with pedals and if necessary can be operated only by the pedaling system. Now, motor scooters on the other hand are powered by a electric or gas motor.
Scooters and Mopeds come from completely different backgrounds. For the moped, it came about due to the need for the rider to have help on increasing the pedaling power. As for the scooter it goes all the way back to 1984 when Hildebrand & Wolfmuller built the first motorcycle that had a top speed of 25-30 miles an hour. By our standards today that now would be considered a scooter.
Scooters and mopeds each have their own requirements in regards to helmets. Mopeds in most states, it is not mandatory for riders over a certain age to wear a helmet. Even though it is not required by law, it is advised for your safety. If a scooter is considered a motorcycle by the state in which you live in then the helmet law does apply. Please be sure to check your local state to see what is required before you ride.
